About Nicholas Stern

Nicholas Stern, also known as Lord Stern, is a globally recognized economist and a leading authority on climate change, international development, and global economic growth. He holds the position of IG Patel Professor of Economics and Government at the London School of Economics, where he also serves as Head of the India Observatory and Chairman of the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment. Since July 2013, he has been the President of the British Academy and was elected Fellow of the Royal Society in June 2014.

From 2000 to 2003, Lord Stern was Chief Economist and Senior Vice President for Development Economics at the World Bank. He also served as Chief Economist and Special Counsellor to the President at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development from 1994 to 1999. Between 2005 and 2007, he advised the UK Government on the Economics of Climate Change and Development, reporting directly to the Prime Minister and the Chancellor of the Exchequer. During this period, he led the Stern Review on the Economics of Climate Change. Additionally, he was Head of the Government Economic Service from 2003 to 2007 and Director of Policy and Research for the Prime Minister’s Commission for Africa. In 2009, he served as President of the European Economic Association.

Lord Stern’s academic career includes teaching and research positions at prestigious institutions such as the London School of Economics, the University of Oxford, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the Ecole Polytechnique and the Collège de France in Paris, the Indian Statistical Institute in Bangalore and Delhi, and the People’s University of China in Beijing. His research focuses on the economics of climate change, economic development and growth, economic theory, tax reform, public policy, and the role of the state and economies in transition.

His early works include books on tea in Kenya and the Green Revolution in India, where he lived for eight months in a village in Northern India in 1974-75. Lord Stern has also authored books on crime, criminal statistics in the UK, public finance, and development. His book “Growth & Empowerment: Making Development Happen” was published in April 2005. The Stern Review on the Economics of Climate Change was published in January 2007 by Cambridge University Press. He has written more than 15 books and over 100 articles. Another notable book, “A Blueprint for a Safer Planet,” was published in April 2009.

Nicholas Stern has received numerous awards for his contributions, including:
