About Hubert Vedrine

Hubert Védrine served as the Diplomatic Adviser to President Mitterrand and as Secretary-General of the Presidency from 1991 to 1995. He then became Foreign Minister in the government of Lionel Jospin from 1997 to 2002. After Jacques Chirac’s reelection in May 2002, Védrine was succeeded by Dominique de Villepin. All three men were known for their strong opposition to unilateral action by the United States in Iraq. Védrine popularized the term “hyper-power” to describe the unparalleled influence and might of the United States at the turn of the century.

Hubert Védrine is a member of the UN’s Alliance of Civilizations initiative and was awarded the Grand Cross with Star of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland
