About Ian Goldin

Ian Goldin is a Professor of Globalisation and Development at the University of Oxford and a Professorial Fellow at Balliol College, Oxford. From 2006 to 2016, he was the founding Director of the Oxford Martin School, an interdisciplinary initiative at Oxford University. Currently, Ian leads Oxford Martin research programs focusing on Technological and Economic Change, the Future of Work, and the Future of Development.

 

From 2001 to 2006, Ian served as Vice President of the World Bank, where he also acted as the Group’s Director of Policy and Special Representative to the United Nations. Before that, he was Chief Executive of the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) and an economic advisor to President Nelson Mandela. In this role, Ian oversaw the transformation of the DBSA into the largest investor in infrastructure across 14 Southern African countries.

Ian’s career also includes positions as Principal Economist at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and Director of Programmes at the OECD Development Centre. He holds an MSc from the London School of Economics and an MA and Doctorate from the University of Oxford.

Ian has been honored with a knighthood by the French government and has received several prestigious awards. He is the author of over 60 journal articles and 25 books, including Age of the City: Why Our Future Will Be Won or Lost Together and The Shortest History of Migration. His previous works include Rescue: From Global Crisis to a Better World, Terra Incognita: 100 Maps to Survive the Next 100 Years, Age of Discovery, and The Butterfly Defect, where he predicted the onset of a global pandemic. Ian has also authored and presented three BBC documentary series: After The Crash, Will AI Kill Development?, and The Pandemic that Changed the World.

In addition to his academic and research roles, Ian has provided advisory services to organizations such as the IMF, UN, EU, and OECD, as well as over 100 Fortune 500 companies. He has also served as a non-executive director for six globally listed companies and chaired a wide range of board committees. Ian is a prominent speaker, having delivered talks at events like TED, Google Zeitgeist, and the World Economic Forum. He is also a founding trustee of the Center for Future Generations and chairs the core-econ.org initiative, which aims to transform economics education.
