About Ann Pettifor

Ann Pettifor is a political economist renowned for her foresight in predicting the Global Financial Crisis of 2007-9 with her book The Coming First World Debt Crisis (Palgrave, 2006). In 2008, she co-wrote the original Green New Deal (GND) with colleagues from the economics and environmental sectors. This initiative was later adopted by US Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez during her successful 2018 Primary campaign. In 2019, Pettifor published The Case for The Green New Deal.

In January 2022, the Scottish government appointed Pettifor to its Just Transition Commission. In 2020, she became the chair of the board of directors of A-Deus, an innovative, community-based clean energy company based in Edinburgh, aiming to deliver clean energy in Africa and elsewhere. She has been awarded honorary doctorates by Newcastle University, Helsinki University, and the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS).
