About Tim Peake

Tim Peake, born on 7 April 1972 in Chichester, England, became the first British ESA astronaut to visit the International Space Station (ISS). He launched on a Soyuz rocket on 15 December 2015 and returned to Earth on 18 June 2016 after spending 186 days in space.

Tim began his career as an Army Air Corps officer in 1992 and served as a Platoon Commander in Northern Ireland with the Royal Green Jackets before starting flight training. He earned his Army Flying Wings in 1994 and flew on military operations in the Former Republic of Yugoslavia, Northern Ireland, and Afghanistan. As a test pilot, he conducted numerous test flights on various military helicopters, including operations with Special Forces. After retiring from the British Army as a major in 2009, Tim worked as a senior helicopter test pilot for AgustaWestland. Over his career, he has logged more than 3000 hours of flying time on over 30 types of helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft.

Tim holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Flight Dynamics and Evaluation from the University of Portsmouth, obtained in 2006, and a commercial pilot’s license, which he actively maintains. During his Principia mission to the ISS, Tim conducted a spacewalk to repair the Station’s power supply, drove a rover across a simulated Mars terrain from space, participated in over 250 scientific experiments for ESA and international partners, and assisted in docking two spacecraft to the Station. His mission included over thirty educational outreach projects, reaching more than two million students.

Tim Peake is an ambassador for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths (STEM) and collaborates closely with the United Kingdom Space Agency (UKSA) and the UK government on their space, education, and outreach programs. He is also an ambassador for The Prince’s Trust, the Scouts, and has close affiliations with Great Ormond Street Hospital and the Make-A-Wish Foundation. He serves on the Advisory Board for two ‘new space’ companies, Skyrora Ltd and Blue Abyss Diving Ltd. Tim was a founding member of the Defence Innovation External Advisory Panel in 2017 and served for eighteen months. In 2016, he was appointed Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for his services to space research and scientific education.

Tim is married with two sons and enjoys skiing, scuba diving, cross-country running, climbing, and motorcycling in his leisure time.
